Abstract (Article Summary)
The last time [Daniel Rakowitz], a 43-year-old former dishwasher, was
in the same courtroom as a jury was for his 1995 sanity trial.
Rakowitz told his jury then that he was a changed man since the days
when he roamed the Lower East Side with a live rooster tucked under
his arm, believing that one day he'd be president of the United
States.

Daniel Rakowitz is the son of a Jewish Sheriff in Texas who left home
for NYC to find his fame and fortune in the mid-1980s but what he got
was notoriety. Would somebody who knows the details of his childhood
and his father's reputation in Texas please make a posting.

MANIAC STORY A JUROR TURNOFF:[SPORTS FINAL Edition]

HELEN PETERSON. New York Daily News. New York, N.Y.: May 26, 2004.
pg. 61
Abstract (Article Summary)
Nearly a dozen candidates begged off when asked if they would have a
problem deciding if East Village maniac Daniel Rakowitz should be
freed from a mental hospital. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Donna
Mills certainly didn't mince her words.

Abstract (Article Summary)
This is [Daniel Rakowitz]'s second attempt to be released from Kirby
Forensic Psychiatric Center on Wards Island. Lawyers for the Manhattan
DA's office and the state Attorney General's Office argue he's still
too dangerous to go free.

Rakowitz is suspected of having killed 7 or 8 women, many of them
strippers at Billy's Topless of Manhattan, fifteen years ago. He had
been a common figure in Thompkins Square Park of the East Village,
often if not always accompanied by his pet parrot perched on his guano
splattered shoulder.

Last week he was denied parole and the jurors were afraid to look at
him.

Abstract (Article Summary)
Stunningly, the question of whether [Daniel Rakowitz] has recouped
enough of his marbles to be safely released onto the streets of Gotham
has landed in the courtroom of Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Donna
Mills. Yes, the same Donna Mills whom a runaway Bronx jury acquitted
two weeks ago of driving while intoxicated despite piles of evidence
pointing to her guilt.

ROBERT GEARTY DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER. New York Daily News. New York,

Abstract (Article Summary)
Daniel Rakowitz, who once claimed he was the Messiah come to Earth to
save the homeless, will try to persuade a jury next month to free him
from Kirby Psychiatric Center on Wards Island.

At his trial in 1991, Rakowitz denied killing [Monika Beerle], but
admitted dismembering, boiling and bleaching her bones "to disinfect
them."

An article in Business Day last Monday about a planned Court TV series
offering the videotaped confessions of people accused of violent
crimes misstated the outcome of a case involving Daniel Rakowitz, who
was taped confessing to the murder and dismemberment of a woman in
Manhattan in 1989. He was tried and found not responsible by reason of
insanity in 1991. He was not judged unfit to stand trial.
